Our Top Stories

An Article by the GT team, Malawi

The LGBTIQA+ community in Africa is a movement that has suffered a lot of setbacks this year, especially in countries like Uganda, Malawi, Tanzania and Zambia where homosexuality still remains a punishable offense.

These laws continue to abuse the basic human rights of Queer people and continue to create a conducive environment for homophobic environments where the minority group is exposed to so much violence. Universal and inalienable, Interdependent and indivisible, Equal and non-discriminatory. They do not stop being human rights depending on one's sexuality, that is a violation of human rights.

As intersectional feminist organizations, it is important to strategize how best we can apply the concept of gender mainstreaming, not from the heteronormative perspective but through an intersectional lens where everyone is included regardless of their sexual orientation or expression.

As a movement, we should work together to come up with advocacy that questions the narrative that breeds violence against queer folks and fights against mainstream media that perpetuate the discussions.

As Africans, we can learn from past struggles that countries like Botswana had to fight for them to legalize homosexuality and contextualize the same in our individual fights.
Let us fight as a movement so that then we can create an Africa safe for everyone to live in freely.
