Choice Is The Essence Of Freedom

Dear reader ,

Rethinking women's ability to choose needs to take into account access to economic constraints, social inclusion, and political environments. It is one thing to decriminalize abortion rights, but if we don’t take into account the limitations women face as a result of deep-rooted inequalities over the years, we are just but making reversible gains. We are excited about the conversations we are having in our upcoming Girl-talk events, where we will be centering the intersectionalities that are often overlooked when advancing gender rights.

Girl-Talk Events You Would Want To Attend!

  • Girl-Talk Benin

Girl-talk Benin will be happening this weekend on 30th July 2022, from 10 am local time. The conversation will be on How stereotypes hinder the effectiveness of reproductive justice in Benin”. Benin legalized abortion in 2021 and although this might look like a win for Beninese feminist movements and for Beninese women in general, the decision of the National Assembly has not been welcomed by public opinion. Sex education, bodily autonomy, or even the right of women to get an abortion are notions that have trouble fitting into Beninese society because of culture, religion, and phallocentric education. In our upcoming Girl-Talk, we will be looking to debunk some of these stereotypes. RSVP here

  • Girl-Talk Nigeria
Girl Talk Nigeria
Girl-Talk Nigeria will be happening on August 13th, 2022 from 11 am GMT+1. In Nigeria, abortion is criminalized, with the exception of cases where it is necessary to save the mother's life. However, According to the PMA 2020 Abortion Survey Results In 2017, the annual incidence of abortions in Nigeria was 29.0 per 1,000 women age 15 to 49 based on respondent reporting—more than 1.2 million abortions. When including information related to the experience of respondents' closest confidantes, the number of abortions in Nigeria rose to nearly 2.0 million. Despite the criminalization, abortion is still happening. If you have money, you are more likely to have access to safe abortion. Self-help options using abortion pills also exist, but getting Misoprostol or Mifepristone in Nigeria can be difficult as they require a prescription to be sold by a pharmacy. There are safe options, but these are options not readily available to the average Nigerian woman. In our upcoming GT, we will be looking at the legal and financial constraints and more. RSVP here
