Happy New Year?

Dear reader ,

We are a whole month late but waaaaiiitttt, the new rush had us in a choke hold, resolutions were taking us faster than we expected and we failed to stop and take a minute. The season was as interesting as it could get, some rest, a lot of family and togetherness wrapped into the goodness of releasing the last breath of 2022 and welcoming 2023.
We had an exciting 2022, it came with many changes both internal and external. We experienced growth, learnt from where we fell and rose higher when we excelled.

Girl Talk has a podcast! Insert some screaming and yelling here, we finally get to sit down and talk through the conversations we enjoy not only in English but in French too. You will meet the team and be able to go back, contribute and learn from this space.
Girl Talk Spaces closed the windows on Kenya and Rwanda while simultaneously opening the door on Sierra Leone, Mali and Guinea. Through the past year growth has come with the question “have we done our work here?” and the response continues to be “which other community can we impact?”

Girl Talk was our first program and we are looking forward to seeing the work we get to do with you, the community that keeps us going. For 2023, we will be looking at organizing information, conversations and advancement of legislations around Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights. Our organizing will be centered on access, inclusivity and educating.

The Girl Talk Journal is back! Feminist work needs to be documented. We will continue to repeat that as often as we can. The greatest injustice continues to be that the work of those before us was not documented. Our journal will feature voices of feminist organizers from over 10 countries and we are looking forward to learning and sharing experiences together.

Home Away From Home! As Choose Yourself, we run a program in Nakivale Refugee Camp, Uganda. We have three core community based aspects which are a library, sponsorship program for school going girls and an entrepreneurship program for women in the camp.

The library has a book club title “Nice and Sharp” where children experience are able to boost their English skills through promotion of reading and conversations. These children are aged between 13 and 17 years.

The sponsorship program has beneficiaries from the refugee camp. We recorded one finalist on her way to secondary and school and are glad to share that every student under the program was promoted to the next class.

The entrepreneurship program runs for 4 months with admission of young girls and women. We run classes on idea development, finance management and sustaining a business. We had our second cohort and are welcoming the third. We hold graduation ceremonies upon completion that both the team and participants are excited for.

Finally, for the past five years we have run Grow With Us, a program that trained and mentored women entrepreneurs on the continent. The climax was a physical retreat in an African country to put a face to the name. This program has been temporarily put on a hold as we think through how to get better for the women we enroll.

We are excited for 2023 as we continue to organize, learn and share. Thank you for taking this journey with us. We look forward to more
